this article and it inspired me to make a 2014 To-Read List in which I must read all of the following books from start to finish and review them before the end of the year. I've added some of my own picks to this list for some variety. Also, for those that apply, I will discuss how the movie compares to the novel.
1. Labor Day by Joyce Maynard
I'm mostly finished with this one, so you can expect a review soon.
2. The Monument's Men by Robert M. Edsel and Bret Witter
3. Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead
Honestly, I'm not really looking forward to this one. I guess I skipped the whole vampire fad because it doesn't interest me at all. Yea, I didn't like Twilight... so sue me. But I'm a stickler for lists and if I'm going to set out to do this, I think I should read every one.
4. Winter's Tale by Mark Helprin
5. A Long Way Down by Nick Hornby
6. Divergent by Veronica Roth
7. The Hundred-Foot Journey by Richard C. Morais
8. This is Where I Leave You by Johnathon Tropper
9. The Maze Runner by James Dashner
10. Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand
11. Serena by Ron Rash
12. Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson
13. The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd
14. Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher
15. Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline
I've already read Gone Girl, Dark Places, The Giver, Wild, and the Fault in Our Stars from the original list, all of which were great reads by the way! I like the idea of doing this because it's forcing me to step out of my usual reading genres and try something different.
Have you read any of these? What did you think? What other books make the grade for your 2014 to-read list?

I don't read nearly enough. I really should get the the library and get some books out!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely! I think it helps me go to sleep and decompress before bed.
DeleteI feel kind of lame, but the majority of my reads are of the YA variety. I'm lame. I LOVED Divergent, but I'm not sure if the movie will live up to the hype, especially since The Hunger Games was so well done.
ReplyDeleteThere's nothing wrong with that. I do enjoy that genre as well. Jodi Picoult has some great novels in that category.
DeleteSo many good books on here! I'm mostly into YA books, love the fast read, and I definitely recommend Divergent and 13 Reasons Why. I'm reading Mazerunner now. Looking forward to hearing how you like the books on this list!
ReplyDeleteI like to mix it up. I've heard great things about Maze Runner as well!
DeleteWinter's Tale, the most beautiful book I have ever read and the only book I have reread so many times that I have lost count. It is not a book for everyone, but anyone who loves this book REALLY loves it. The language is stunning, the stories beautiful. Sometimes I just pick the book up (I am on my third copy) and just read random pages - including my favourite chapter called "Nothing is Random". I am so worried that the movie that is coming out is just going to butcher this story, but I will be going to see it just in case it can do even a little justice to this book.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to read it. Thanks Kristi!
DeleteI'm listening to Gone Girl right now on audiobook. I've read Divergent (the whole series) - and it's great, a really fun entertaining series. I've also read Unbroken, which is also amazing. I learned so many things I did not know in Unbroken. Labor Day is next on my list!
ReplyDeleteLabor Day is pretty good, nice quick easy read.
DeleteThe Maze Runner is so good. I read the whole series and it is so different from anything else I have ever read. I hope you love it!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait! Thanks Cori :)
DeleteLoved Unbroken! I highly recommend the Luminaries, too!
ReplyDeleteGreat, I'll add it to my list on Goodreads!
DeleteI've only read Steve Jobs and it was a really good read, but it took me forever to read. Mostly because when I read it I just gave birth ;-)
ReplyDeleteBut it does provide great insight to his thinking.
