Mom Monday: Food Fiasco

Yes I know it's not Monday but I forgot to post this yesterday...

Toddlers are unusual creatures especially when it comes to food. If you can believe it my toddler used to be the BEST eater, he loved asparagus... Yes, a green vegetable, honestly he couldn't get enough.
Now things have definitely changed and I've learned a lot of important rules regarding toddler eating habits:

1. Ketchup might very well be a food group

2. Just because they like something one day don't assume it will be the same the next day

3. Snacks are essentials (on the same level as diapers as necessities go)

4. If the food on your plate is the exact same food on their plate just cut up into smaller pieces it is therefore inedible

5. (Sub rule of #4) in which case whatever is on your plate now belongs to them and has to be cut into smaller pieces...

6. Forks are weapons not eating utensils

7. No toddler shall ever leave a meal with a clean shirt

8. Vegetables most especially green ones cannot be swallowed by toddlers

9. (The exception to #8) if said vegetables are covered in cheese sauce to the point where they are unrecognizable which in turn defeats the purpose of eating said vegetables in the first place they may be ingested.

10. Asking a toddler what they want to eat when their language consists of very few coherent words, "no" being very prominent, they cannot be trusted.
eg. Me: "Griffin would you like Ice Cream?" Griffin: "NO!"

I'm trying to be creative with our meals so that he can maintain some variety in his diet but some days meals look like this no matter what.
I was a picky eater as a child so maybe I'm to blame for this one...

If you have kids, how do you make sure they get all the food groups in?

Mom Monday: Double Take

As you may know I've been attending CrossFit regularly now and I've been getting to know all the other friendly faces who attend daily torture sessions with me, HAHA! Last week I was partners with a really nice lady for the "max wattage row" session. She seemed familiar at the time but I couldn't for the life of me place her, more than anything I was sure I remembered her voice...
This morning as I was leaving CrossFit I overheard a conversation she was having with the lady at the desk about the hospital and it all suddenly clicked! She had been my doctor when I had to go back to the hospital after having my son.

I had only been home for 36 hours when I realized something was terribly wrong, I couldn't breathe correctly or move my upper body without being in extreme pain. After calling the nurses line asking what to do, they told me to call an ambulance. I was worried that might be a bit drastic, I mean I was conscious and talking so I called a family member to bring me to the hospital so Cody could stay with the baby (I didn't think it would take very long). I probably should have taken an ambulance like the nurse suggested because my wait in emergency was incredibly painful (keep in mind I'd just experienced labor, and I was debating whether this was more painful). When I finally got in and they did some X-rays it was clear I wasn't leaving anytime soon. The following morning still unclear with what was happening but thankfully on some pain meds I met the wonderful doctor that I ran into again today. After countless tests and lots of doctors opinions it was determined that I had an intra-uterine infection, pneumonia and a partially collapsed lung. I was in the hospital for several days following that on IV antibiotics and oxygen, thankfully the doctor allowed me to have Griffin there as well so I could still spend time with my newborn and feed him when I was able.

Hearing her voice today brought me right back to those hopeless moments in the hospital. I've mentioned before how having my son was the most amazing time in my life, it was also the most scared I have ever been. Knowing that there was something horribly wrong in my body and not being able to take care of Griffin fully during that time was the most helpless I've ever felt in my life. I NEVER want to feel like that again.

In some ways it's hard to believe that was only 18 months ago... Just as I did a double take when I heard that doctor's voice today I have to do one when I think about all that's happened and how far we've come since those moments in the hospital. 16 half marathons later, I am a different woman, and a stronger Mama!

Mom Monday: Mom Guilt

There are new challenges daily when you're a mom but the thing I find the most challenging is something I like to call "Mom Guilt".

It doesn't seem to matter how much I do or how much I prepare but when I leave the house to run or see a friend even if he's napping safely at home with a babysitter or his Dad, there's always a  twinge of guilt that I'm not there or I might be missing something important. I'm aware that it's completely irrational and ridiculous because everybody needs time away but it's still there and it's not going away any time soon.

I've been told that I'm not alone but that doesn't make me feel any better. I used to think it would go away as he got older and maybe it will but I'm not so sure... I feel like it might have even started when I was pregnant and I worried about everything I ate, how I slept, even how I sneezed and how it might have affected the baby.

Our latest mommy guilt related challenge has been leaving Griffin at child-minding when I go to CrossFit, it's silly because there really is no actual door separating us, he's literally around the corner the entire time I'm working out but we just can't see each other. Now that he knows where we are going when we go there he doesn't always want to go voluntarily especially when it's busy and this can result in a meltdown of tears and screaming. Usually he calms down within a minute of me rounding the corner but it still feels awful to walk out of room when your child is crying for you.

I don't think it's a bad thing that I feel that way, on the contrary I think it's just part of being a parent. I'd be kind of worried if it was easy to walk away from him screaming his face off but sometimes you just have to do it.

Parenting.com has a great list called 31 Reasons You Shouldn't feel Mom Guilt here are my top 5:

"
1. Accepting your son's compliment that you're a good cook when he's eating pre-breaded microwave chicken breasts. You did your part. You pressed "Start."

2. Tossing their artwork. After you've saved the truly superior thumb pots and the especially sentimental glitter collages, you will still have a heap of crafts the size of Mount Etna. Fill up a big black Hefty bag after they're asleep, pour yourself some wine, and then watch Hoarders. You'll feel better instantly.

3. Letting it slip that the tooth fairy was actually her daddy. You didn't destroy her childhood innocence. You let her in on a grown-up secret that she must never, ever tell her little brother, which makes her feel mature and important.

4. Finding aspects of motherhood incredibly tedious. If you didn't find watching your child go down the slide for the 100th time that day ("Mom, look at meeee!") or nagging him to put his socks in the hamper a bit of a snooze, you'd be too easily amused, and hence a moron.

5. Dipping into your son's goody bag when he isn't looking. What's a funsize Snickers between family members?
"

And sometimes it just feels like this:

Mom Monday: The First Day (Part 2)

Part 1

When we arrived at the hospital I'll admit I was nervous but more than anything I was just ready to get on with it. Being pregnant for nearly 38 weeks is not comfortable, being pregnant for 38 weeks and gaining 20+lbs of water in a few days is extremely UNCOMFORTABLE. I was glad we got in pretty much right away.

They started the induction process by giving me Cytotec, a drug used to start labor. They assured me that it usually takes a while to start anything and I should just relax. Well my body must have been ready to go because within 20 minutes I was feeling contractions and all of the sudden I was a lot more uncomfortable. The nurses seemed surprised by the speed at which things were progressing so they moved me into a birthing room within the hour.

Once we got in there and were settled, I continued to have regular contractions but they were still manageable. This went on late into the evening, I did lots of walking up and down the halls but nothing seemed to be going anywhere. By morning things had sort of stalled out and they decided I should start Pitocin. This drug meant that I would now be in the bed for the rest of my labor and a nurse would be monitoring me constantly. Things started to ramp up pretty quickly now and it came time to break my water around noon (more than 24 hours since we began the induction). Once they broke my water things got drastically more painful. Within a few hours I decided I'd had enough, the laughing gas wasn't helping except for maybe 10 secs at a time, I wanted the epidural. Now when you watch TLC's a Birth Story it seems like they just come in from around the corner to give you the epidural... this was NOT the case, they had to call an anesthesiologist to come in... seriously! When they finally came I was pretty annoyed, but thankfully the epidural procedure wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

It gets fuzzy from here on out. All I know is sometime around 7:30/8:00PM it was time to push. This was terrifying and painful and it went on for two and half hours. I'd say after about an hour I could feel that things weren't moving forward and I kept requesting (in between contractions) to be checked because I thought he was stuck, but it took a while for everyone to get up to speed. Finally the consensus became he was stuck in the birth canal and we would be going to the operating room in preparation for a C-Section but we would try the forceps right before. The epidural had worn off during the pushing and I'd have to say this was the worst pain I'd faced all night.

Once they had me prepped and in the operating room and I was numb from the chest down they tried the forceps. I don't think they tried more than twice, the baby didn't react well and it was clear he wasn't coming out that way. It was now 20 minutes to midnight on 11/11/2011 the doctors and my husband made some jokes about rushing to get him out before midnight and I very loudly stated there was no need to rush cutting me open!

It took 3 doctors to un-wedge him and pull him out of the birth canal but at 12:01am on 11/12/2011 my little Griffin was born!
The first day I became a Mom was probably the most terrifying and wonderful day of my life.
Despite everything that happened during my labor and the complications I had following, I was blessed with a happy and healthy baby.

This was our first trip home from the hospital (we ended up going back about 48 hours later):
I had an inta-uterine infection and pneumonia, I most likely had both when I left the hospital with a fever. After another 10 days in the hospital I was so ready to be home and start our lives as a family of 3.

Yesterday I celebrated my second Mother's Day and I couldn't feel more blessed.

Happy Mother's Day to all you other Mom's out there!

Mom Monday: The First Day (Part 1)

So on this addition of Mom Monday I wanted to write about the very first day I became a Mom in 2011 and how I got there!
(this might be my longest post ever, sorry but it's a long story!)

Getting pregnant for us was not totally planned. Yes we had been married for a few months and now it seems so insignificant, but we were planning on giving it a little while before trying for a baby.
Our Wedding Day
Anyways, things happen and there I was pregnant and I knew... I just knew it before I even took the test. But of course I HAD to take the test to prove it to myself and my husband. I wasn't surprised when the test came up positive as my body had already felt very different for a couple of days, I wasn't scared, I wasn't even anxious to tell anyone (except of course my husband and my sister!). I was very calm and quiet , almost eerily so. I spent most of the day just thinking, thinking about how so much can change in only a moment, that moment changed my life and I didn't know it yet but in 9 months I was going to have an incredible little boy.

That calmness didn't really last very long, within a few days I began to try and figure out how this little baby was going to fit in our lives (as if we didn't have room)... Now I realize we had so much room in our hearts and our lives for him, endless amounts of love and space, there will always be space and time for him. But I started concerning myself with the practical things, where would his room be, what was I going to do with all the stuff in that space currently, what did I need for him... and so on.

I had some small issues in my first trimester, something called 'Placenta Previa' but after a few days the doctors seemed convinced it wouldn't cause me any further issues and we would know more around 5 months. So we decided to announce our upcoming arrival on Mother's Day as I was just about 3 months at that point and it seemed we were past the point of worry.
Our little munchkin sucking his
 thumb at 20 weeks ultrasound
Fast forward to about 5 months, things began to change... the first and most exciting thing was finding out that we were having a little boy! I was already pretty convinced it was a boy but it was nice to hear it from the doctor. With this being my first child I really wanted to know what we were having so that I could be "sure of something" as I felt uncertain about so many other things. The ultrasound confirmed that the Placenta Previa had resolved itself and was not going to an issue during delivery. But after a few more doctor's appointments it became clear that my blood pressure was steadily rising. At this point, I was put on bed rest and referred to an OB to be monitored more closely.
Somewhere around 28 weeks

The OB also referred me to a special neonatal doctor that does more advanced ultrasounds. Though I was always nervous they would find something, this doctor and those ultrasounds were great. We got to see so much detail including yawning, sucking his thumb, and a steady and strong heartbeat. This doctor had me put on a home program so that a nurse would come to my house to do a simple procedure called an NST weekly to measure the baby's heartbeat/movement and any early contractions. I also enjoyed these appointments, despite how the way I was feeling began to deteriorate I got to know that the baby was doing great and growing. As we got closer to 35 weeks, I became increasingly uncomfortable retaining water, and my blood pressure continued to rise. During the NST the nurse noticed that my so-called irregular contractions had become regular, VERY regular and I was also beginning to feel some pain. With the nurse's recommendation in hand we made our 'first' trip to the hospital (well not the first, because of weekly blood tests etc, but the first exciting one!).

Once we got there and got settled in I did not receive the warm welcome I was hoping for from the nurses at the hospital, instead they were very frank with me (which I understand but still not what I was hoping for). They explained that this hospital in particular did not have a NICU and if I did deliver my baby there pre-term, he could be sent to another hospital and I could have to stay there to recover. We had a couple of choices, we could leave, or we could stay and see what happened. I was scared, I stayed despite the fear of actually giving birth and being separated from him.

Almost as if he knew I was scared, everything suddenly stopped. We were at 35 +5 (35 weeks and 5 days), 36 weeks is considered full term and sort of when you get the all-clear because if you go into labor after that point the likelihood of the baby needing the NICU decreases greatly.

So we went home, my labor had stopped, we weren't going to meet our baby that day. I'll admit it, though I had been scared about delivering without the NICU, I was disappointed that it wasn't THE day.
Walking through a corn maze at 36 weeks in an attempt to spur on labor (while supposedly on bedrest) bad idea and miserable failure. Notice the hospital bracelet still on my arm.

The next ultrasound is where they estimated the baby's weight, and at that point they said based on his measurements he could be over 10lbs, now THAT scared me. As I left that appointment the doctor told me if I didn't go into labor again beforehand I would be induced at 37 weeks, standard procedure for a pregnant woman with high blood pressure.

37 weeks came and went, at 37 +1 I phoned the OB who said I was not yet pre-eclamptic so I could wait, then I phoned the neonatal specialist and he called the OB, long story short I was in the hospital within 24 hours.

So then begins the birth story...

Ah but you'll have to wait for the rest until the next Mom Monday, my Mother's Day edition and Part 2 of this post!

Mom Monday: Going Home Early

This past weekend I took off from running. Not exactly what I had planned even though I am tapering I had hoped to get 10k or so in at some point but it just didn't happen. My Sister In Law got married on Saturday and both my husband and I were in the wedding party. The wedding was beautiful despite our gloomy west coast weather. Griffin was a champ and didn't make a peep during the ceremony. My sister came to help with Griffin and they had a great time together!

I was thinking this weekend about how when my brother in law got married in July of 2011 and I was pregnant at their wedding and thinking about all the things that were changing in our lives. I thought about how soon we would be parents or I guess we already were depending on how you look at things... There would be no more staying out at parties or sleeping in on Saturday mornings. I was never a huge "party girl" but it occurred to me that it wouldn't be an option anymore and in a way I thought I was losing some sense of freedom that I had never taken advantage of. It was probably just pregnancy hormones which give you a chance to experience an extreme range of emotions... My poor husband ha. ha.

Anyways, in that moment a couple of years ago that's how I had felt and this weekend as I reflected on it I felt no sense of loss whatsoever. Though I enjoyed myself at the wedding and had a wonderful time with family and friends, as midnight approached I was ready to go home and be a Mom and check on my little boy fast asleep in his crib.

Don't get me wrong everyone needs a night off occasionally, most especially Mom's. There are some days where I want to pull my hair out and they never seem to end but I still don't feel like I'm missing out on anything. In a way I feel like I'm more complete than I ever was. That's not to say you are not complete if you are not a Mom but being a Mom has changed my life in a way that I never knew could happen.

Here's to going home early to this amazing kid:

Mom Monday & Wet Bag Giveaway

I've been trying to find a way to incorporate a "mom specific" post into my blog for a while, I recently decided that Monday's on the blog will now be known as "Mom Monday" where I will talk about my experiences with motherhood. If any of you other bloggers are interested in a linkup for future Mom Monday's, please leave a comment below.

When I became a Mom about 18 months ago my whole life changed, yea I know people say that all the time, but it really does. There's so many things I thought I knew but I really had no clue. There are lots of complex topics that fit into that statement that I want to and will talk about but I thought I should start small...

When I become a Mom my interpretation of the word "independence" changed. I am my own person but I am also a Mom which means I usually have a little boy vying for my attention for what used to feel like 24 hours a day (and I'm sure some days it was) and now is more like 12 hours a day. When you have a child it's always about the next thing, first it was when are they going to sit up? When are they going to crawl? Walk? Talk? It just goes on and on. And then when it happens I always have a mini panic attack when I realize he doesn't need me in the same way he did before, he's growing up. On the bright side it means he's gaining independence and so am I.

When you are a new Mom it's the little things that help you maintain your sanity and your independence. I love getting out with Griffin (my son) even if we're just going to the park but I've always hated toting around a giant knapsack or baby bag. It sounds so silly but I missed just having a purse. About 6 months ago I decided enough is enough and I needed to find a solution. I was frustrated that the few times I went out without Griffin I had to switch bags or carry the baby bag, what a pain (who wants to carry diapers around on date night)... I began searching, I tried little backpacks and some various tote bags but everything felt like a baby bag or it just wasn't big enough. That was until I found out that someone I know, or should I say reconnected with on Facebook (Isn't FB funny that way) makes these bags called "wet bags":
2 Wet Bags created by Made Just For You - by Lisa
It's so simple and perfect when you think about it, it's a cotton bag with a waterproof interior. You can customize it by picking your own fabric, and she has tons of options. You can even get coordinating snack bags made as well. Because it is not a formed stiff type of bag you can sort of throw everything in there you might need and it fits everywhere including under the stroller. You can't see in this picture but it also has a small strap on the side. So now when I go out with or without Griffin I still get to carry a purse. Sometimes he even carries the wet bag, whoa!

Here's a picture of a coordinated blanket, wet bag, and snack bag:
