Carry On

So, as it turns out I took an ENTIRE WEEK off from running, that's right a whole week. I had to do something because my cold & ear infection would not go away. I also ended up being pretty wrecked after the NYC Half Marathon because of running while so unwell. I was ready to get out there today and it was so beautiful I couldn't not go! My mother-in-law happened to be watching Griffin this afternoon since my hubby started a new job and I had a dentist appointment so I got the rare opportunity to run during the day in the sunshine!
It was so gorgeous out, I loved every minute of my 8km run. It was warm enough to be in a t-shirt, I could have probably even gotten away with a tank top. What a vast difference in temperature from the race in NYC. After a kilometer or so I found a nice speedy pace and decided I was going to tackle a few hills and go an extra few kilometers. The thing was I had to be somewhere so there was going to be no letting up with my pace, this should be a new form of speed training - running when you have to be somewhere ha ha. At about halfway, a bunch of the songs that were on my NYC playlist started and it finally set in - I ran the NYC HALF MARATHON, ya Krista you did that.  Whoa, this running thing isn't just a hobby anymore, things just got real.

I think after not running this past week (the first time in a whole year not running for 7 days), even though it's what I needed at the time, I just didn't feel good about it. I missed that feeling of accomplishment I feel even after just a 5k. And then, "Carry On" by FUN. came on my iPod, do you know the song?
I love that song, it was the perfect song for a perfect day. Thank you universe, I needed today.
I'm ready to carry on with my training now, I'm evolving as a runner and next up on the list is the Virtual Jelly Bean Half Marathon!

The RunnerBox Giveaway is in full swing, if you haven't entered yet be sure to do so here before Friday!

Race Review: New York City Half Marathon

It's taken me so long to wrap my head around the fact that this race is over, our whole trip to New York City was so fast - it really hasn't all sunk in yet. As you may know from my previous posts that I have been sick since March 9th, it began as a nasty cold and long lasting fever. I was very nervous about how this was going to affect my race, after all this is quite possibly the biggest and most exciting race I will ever be a part of.

My sister Shandess and I headed to the airport last Thursday for an early morning departure. I was feeling alright, the significant fever was gone and I was just achy and full of sinus issues. We had a great journey to NYC, we had a short delay in TO but still managed to get in on time. We were so lucky to be staying at a hotel IN Times Square, so we hopped in our first NYC taxi and headed in that direction. We found somewhere to eat and headed to bed anxious about getting up and seeing NYC in the daylight. When I awoke the next morning I knew something wasn't quite right, I felt worse. My neck, throat, and ear on my left side were throbbing in pain. I pondered for a long time about what to do, we'd been there for less than 12 hours and I couldn't bear the thought of taking time away from our few short days to see a doctor or even to FIND a doctor. We bought some bus tickets for a hop on/hop off tour and made our way to the Guggenheim Museum. It didn't take me long to realize there was no other choice then to find a doctor as soon as possible or I wouldn't be doing anything never mind running a half marathon. I found a place that would take me in the afternoon so we had a few hours to kill and we decided to go explore Central Park. This was probably the first time I noticed how cold it was. I expected it wouldn't be warm exactly but when I had looked at the weather report it suggested Spring temperatures similar to what we were experiencing back home. This was no Spring temperature... it was cold, bitterly cold and VERY windy. We trudged on and tried not to let the weather affect our exploring. After spending most of the afternoon at the doctors, I was not surprisingly diagnosed with an ear infection and prescribed antibiotics. We picked those up and headed back towards Times Square and the theater district as we had tickets to see the Lion King! Besides the race this Broadway show probably topped the list for our trip:
We also visited the expo on Friday. Honestly, I expected it to be a little bigger than it was. I made sure to get some Sparkly Soul headbands though, one black and one white/green stripe. I also later realized that I didn't manage to get any safety pins for my bib. If I had been at home it wouldn't have been an issue as I have endless amounts but I had to make a special trip to the pharmacy for those on Saturday night. I also stopped to fill out one of these signs that they had covering the walls at the Expo:

I was pleased that I had my bib and I was one step closer to the race, even if it was going to be with an ear infection. On Saturday I began to feel a little bit better, I was still uncomfortable but aware that I was going to be able to run. However the weather began to scare me, it was getting colder and then much to my dismay it started snowing:
We were back in our hotel by early evening so that we could get something to eat and make sure to attempt a restful nights sleep. Before I knew it race morning had arrived:

Despite my fear about finding a taxi I managed to do so quite easily but I did have to walk quite a bit because I wasn't able to get very close to the start line via taxi. It didn't bother me much though, it wasn't snowing anymore, it was cold but I felt okay as long as I was moving. I also got to walk by all the corrals and see all the elite runners preparing to start. There were tons of photographers which was nice to see, I'm still waiting for those photos though. Here are some I asked a fellow runner to take with my iphone:
I'm not sure if you can see it but there was still snow on the ground in central park. I got into my corral because I knew they'd be closing shortly and then I had to WAIT. This part felt like forever... I ended up standing there for just over an hour, I progressively got colder and colder despite my throwaway sweater and garbage bag. So once that hour was over I was more than ready to get going, the sun had risen, and it really was a beautiful morning despite the temperature. We took off through the park, I tried to keep a steady pace and for the most part I was feeling great, I could feel some fluid in my ear but I wasn't terribly uncomfortable. Then, we hit the hills, these were mostly the only hills in the entire race so I did my best to power through knowing that it was temporary. I didn't take a water break until kilometer 6 and I only stopped for 30 seconds, it was at this point I realized we would be soon exiting the park. I settled into a steady pace and tried to focus on taking in the sights. As we came through Strawberry Fields I knew this would be the last I'd see of Central Park and that meant we weren't far from running through Times Square! As we came out onto the streets the people multiplied, they were lining the streets for as far as the eye could see. The cheer stations on this race far outdid any race I've ever done. There was also a water station at least every mile, I definitely could have done without my fuel belt. This ladies and gentlemen was my favorite moment of the race:

It was so amazing running through the center of the NYC streets surrounded by all the other runners. Definitely my most memorable race moment. We weren't quite halfway at this point and with Times Square behind me I had to buckle down. Then things started to fall apart, I began to feel nauseous and stopped hitting the water stations in fear that it might make it worse. We rounded a corner and literally got hit in the face with the wind, we were now adjacent the river and the wind was blowing me all over the place. I knew the majority of the rest of the race paralleled the river and I had no choice but to fight through it. I struggled, the nausea got worse and I watched my PR slip away. At this point we could see the statue of Liberty off in the distance to the right and directly in front of us was Freedom Tower, the new world trade center:
At this point my Sister and I hadn't visited the memorial site and it really was very impressive from this viewpoint. I focused my sights on the tower knowing that the finish line was only a few kilometers past that. Once we reached the site of the World Trade Center we began our descent into the battery park tunnel, I sort of lost my motivation at this point, I couldn't believe it, we were so close and I felt like I was falling apart. With the lack of running in the days prior to the race and being sick, I just felt so completely drained at kilometer 19. A runner came up behind me and literally gave me a push and told me to get going. I feel like this was some sort of runner's karma because I have done that many times before when I saw someone walking so close to the finish, that was it, it was all I needed and I pushed all the way to the finish line. When I crossed it was such a bittersweet moment, I felt so nauseous that I was pleased it was over but I was also sad that it was done. I did my best to take in every second of the race and it will definitely go down in the books as my most memorable race. It was not a PR despite the speedy first half of the race, I finished in 2:21:55, it's taken me a few days to be okay with that because I really wanted a PR. But I have no regrets, I know I did everything I could considering how I was feeling. My only complaint about the entire race was the pack we got at the finish line was lacking as far as post-race food goes. There was NO chocolate milk! Only an apple, some pretzels, gatorade, and water. I am so thankful for the foil blanket that volunteers were handing out and for my sister waiting for me with my warm sweater, that really made me feel better. This was a well organized and incredible race and if you ever get the chance you should enter the lottery and try to get in! So there, that's it, the most amazing memorable race is done. There will be more photos hopefully tomorrow, I will add them here and to my race photo album.

WOW... I can't believe it's over.

Yesterday I began my day by taking my 2nd taxi ever in New York City to central park making my way to my corral along with 18000 other runners. After a VERY chilly wait I began the race of a lifetime around Central Park, through Times Square, past the new World Trade Center, and through the Battery Park tunnel ending finally at the South Street Seaport.

There are so many things to say about this race and this trip and I just haven't had time to process it all just yet. I've been up for nearly 24 hours now and I need to go to sleep and digest everything that's happened. My race report will be up in the next couple days complete with some great photos!

Until then I will share a couple of things:

1. This was the coldest start to a race I've ever had.

2. I've never run while that sick and I'm STILL sick... seriously.

3. It was not a PR despite my best efforts. Not sure how I feel about this yet.

4. NYC was completely different than I imagined.

5. This could be the MOST memorable race I've ever done.

6. I have never been this sore post-race before.

7. I love Vancouver and I'm so happy I live here.

More to come. I hope everyone who ran on St. Patrick's Day had a great time, I look forward to reading about it but now I need to rest and recover.

Also, I have some more great reviews/giveaways coming up so stay tuned!

10 hours...

In a little more than 10 hours I will be standing in my corral getting ready to start the race of a lifetime and oh boy am I nervous, maybe the most nervous I've ever been before a race...
Why?

1. We are in New York City! It's so exciting to be here but also super overwhelming. We have already gotten lost a few times and it's near impossible to hail a cab and I have to do that at 6:15 am tomorrow morning...

2. I am still sick and I have an ear infection. Shortly into our first morning here I began to panic about the aching in my ear and neck so we found a doctor here and got a prescription for some antibiotics. Thank goodness it doesn't hurt as much anymore.

3. It's snowing.
I know it is technically winter in NYC, and I knew this was a possibility but I sort of ignored that fact and well now we are mere hours away and I'm sort of dreading waking up to the freezing cold morning.

I know I can do this but I'm just hoping everything works out.

I have really limited access to blogging and the Internet so if you'd like to find out how my race went in the short term you can track me live on the free NYC Half app or you can also check out my twitter tomorrow.

LEAVING on a jetplane!

If you're looking for a race report on the Golden Ears Half Marathon, you won't find one, I had to make a really tough decision on Sunday, you can read about that here.  My good friend, Nikki completed the race and had a great time.

WE are down to less than 48 hours to get all my stuff together and get on that plane to New York City!

Here's the thing, I'm still sick :(. I feel like today it might be finally turning around but it really is a slow process. With all the running I've done over the past year I haven't really been getting sick very often, I'm going to be honest, I forgot what it was like and it totally sucks.

I've done my best to rest and take it easy and not think about the race so I can get healthy but I've run out of time -- I've got errands, packing, laundry and maybe just maybe, a run tomorrow?!

I can't believe that quite possibly the biggest race of the year is just a few days away. Thank you everyone for your support on twitter/the blog over the last few days while I've been dealing with this setback.

This will probably be the last post before I leave since there's no packing done. I hope to update throughout the trip, I'll have my iPad so I'll have some basic blog functionality.

Stay tuned for the Giveaway winner announcement tomorrow!!!

Something I never wanted to do.

I can't believe I'm going to say this: I didn't run, I didn't go to my race. I still have a fever and I'm feeling absolutely disgusting. I had to make one of those decisions that you know is right but it feels so wrong.

Last nights pep talk was a total last ditch effort at convincing myself I would miraculously be better in 12 hours. I was only fooling myself.

So no race recap, no run, no anything. Just praying to be healthy for the NYC Half next Sunday.

New York! New York!

"Start spreading the news
I am leaving today
I want to be a part of it
New York New York!" - Frank Sinatra

Okay so I'm not leaving today, I'm leaving in 7 but I can barely contain my excitement! In honor of our impending trip I decided to do a post purely about New York and our trip. I was thinking about how to lay this post out and I've decided to follow the 5 W's, did you learn that in school? Well, when I was in Grade 3 that's how our teacher taught us to do book reports, this isn't relevant at all but anyways...

The first "W" is Who?
Who is going to New York? Why me and my sister of course. Now my sister is in reality my "Step" Sister but for mostly my entire life, as long as I can remember anyways, I've called her my Sister so I never use the "Step" word. Besides, if there was every anyone in this world meant to be MY sister, Shandess is that person. When we were children our parents used to dress us the same so much that people thought we were blood-related more than that, they thought we were twins?!? I'm not sure how they got that though since we are two years apart.
Myself & Shandess circa 1993
Griffin, Me making some strange face, & Shandess October 2012
The next "W" is What?
What are we going to be doing? EVERYTHING! I have never been to New York and neither has Shandess so I want to see everything! I am a total tourist, I want to take pictures on the Brooklyn Bridge, I want to eat a slice of pizza, and I want to go to the top of the Empire State Building! We have decided to take a bus tour on one of those awesome double decker buses. It will be epic. Shandess happens to be an amazing photographer so even better than experiencing all that we will have some great photos to remember this trip. We will be there for the famous NYC St. Patrick's Day Parade, did you know that New York has the LARGEST St. Patty's Day parade in the world? Pretty crazy! Do you think we should dress like this?

The next "W" is When?
Well we leave next week!!! 7 days and counting :)

The next "W" is Why?
Because I am running the New York City Half Marathon on March 17th!

The next "W" is Where?
Well I think that's clear, but if you didn't catch on we are going to NEW YORK CITY!

"And you bet baby
If I can make it there
You know, I'm gonna make it just about anywhere
Come on, come through
New York, New York, New York" -Frank Sinatra

Work it Out Wednesday

Well today was a new milestone -- I did more hills than planned. I've never done that or wanted to do that. Honestly, I didn't really want to but I had extra time and I new I could do it so at this point, why not right? We go to this hill called "Marathon Hill" to do our hill training, it's long, winding, and brutal. I could probably think of a million excuses not to do hill training but I know it works so I go and I'm not happy till it's over. It's hard and I'm not sure it ever gets easier.

I took this picture at the bottom of the hill (keep in mind it turns twice after this), I'd say it's a 1/2km up, maybe some of my RR buddies know the actual distance?

I took this picture at the top looking down. It's always satisfying to reach the top, mostly when it's the last repeat.

I'm glad I did the hills tonight, hopefully it pays off during Mile 3 of the NYC Half, the area know as "Harlem Hills". During this weekend's race (Golden Ears Half) I will also encounter a long SLOW incline going over a local bridge. Hills are just part of a runner's regime, I have a love/hate relationship with them but I will keep at it.
This was somewhere between hill 3 and 6

Following hill training I headed off to Equilibria for my training session. It was a good one and I feel like I will be sore tomorrow. I had a little bit of a fall when I was doing the "running man" on two bosu balls... not my decision mind you. I rolled my ankle but I think it will be okay, I decided to ice it just to be safe:
I finished off my evening with a dinner of a turkey sandwich and of course a small glass of chocolate milk! Unfortunately with all the running, training, and baking something had to slide, this week it was the laundry so I will get after that tomorrow... I hope. Also coming up later this week is a post about my upcoming trip to New York City with my sister!

Sunday Runday!

Oh what a run! It's as if today's gorgeous sunshine makes up for the torrential downpour we had for 3 days straight... maybe not. Seriously I do actually like the rain but the last few days were a bit much. Today was the perfect day to run, I love it when it's sunny and cool, my favorite temperature.
We ran just about 12km, so not a super long run but I certainly felt it after the 8km yesterday. There were definitely a few twinges in my right leg, I think because of all the trips to my chiropractor. I imagine it will take a few weeks for my right side to catch up in strength to the left. Until then, I'll just have to do the exercises and be okay with those little twinges and the extra soreness.
As I was running I began to think about everything coming up, I've got the Golden Ears Half Marathon next Sunday, and drum roll please.... two weeks from today I will be running through Times Square in New York City! I can't believe it's almost here, it was such a surprise to make it into the lottery to run that race back in the fall, I wasn't even sure I was going to be able to come. I also get to go with my Sister, I can't wait, we haven't been on a trip together since we were children, it's going to be so much fun!

Before all my races I spend some time considering what I'd like to wear. The NYC Half is taking place on St. Patrick's Day!  I couldn't help myself, I'm going to be in NYC so it will be a special race for me, I have to dress up right?

Here's my plan so far:
13in2013 Shirt, Lululemon Cool Racerback in Mint, Brisk Run Arm Warmers, Team Sparkle Skirt, Lululemon Pace Setter Skirt, Argyle Team Sparkle Race Legs, and St. Patty's headband and necklace!

I'm currently debating about my shirt. Although I love my 13in2013 shirt, I bought the non-tech shirt version so it's just regular cotton.  I think I might get pretty cold once I start sweating. I was thinking of getting a Lululemon swiftly top in the mint... hmm do I really need another lulu shirt? Probably not. I'm also going to bring my 'magic pants' with me in case it's too cold for the skirt.

I got the news that the product for the giveaway is on it's way and in the mail now! Are you excited? I am!
